Catching Jack the Ripper

S2 E3: Can AI be used to solve real life murders?

WELCOME, PastMasters! On Monday 13 November episode 3 of the new season drops with the team taking on Jack the Ripper.

Donning his detective hat and bundling into his time travel machine, Tan, AKA Inspector Nathaniel, heads straight to Scotland Yard and demands to speak to the head of the murder squad. But will they believe a man who claims to be from the future?

Available from Monday morning on your pod platform of choice.

PS can AI really solve actual true crimes? Read our blog post here.

HarshMaster

One of our biggest gripes with using ChatGPT to play a game is that it makes it too easy. Too easy to avoid trouble, too easy to avoid capture and death, and too easy to bully the programme into letting you do whatever you want. But we’ve been messing with the starter prompt, the bit that holds the actual instructions for the game.

As you can see from the screengrab below we’re making some progress. There’s also a lesson here about not starting a fight with a samurai in feudal Japan.

We’re going to capture some playthroughs with this newer, harsher game and will be posting these episodes soon.

‘Don’t mess with samurai’ - an early lesson from our new, more difficult game.

Upcoming episodes

If you’re enjoying season 2 so far, stay tuned for more adventures including the truth behind how Stonehenge was constructed (it’s weirder than you think), a trip into the distant future to foil the cyber crime of the millennium and a two-player mission to save Jesus from his doom.

AI in the news: GPT detector

One of the biggest headaches with chat programs like ChatGPT must surely be for teachers. How on Earth do you know whether a student has really done their homework and done some thinking about the subject? Or whether they have plugged in ‘Give me a 1,400 word essay about the reasons for the rise of the Bolsheviks’ and filed the output as their homework?

Well, apparently there is now a way to detect GPT-written homework.

Commiserations to lazy students everywhere.

Until next time, Tan and the PastMaster Crew
