Murder mystery

S3E3: Move over, Hercule Poirot

Inspector Claus (AKA Keon) using ‘the stare’

In Monday’s PastMaster Keon waxes his moustache and shows Hercule Poirot there is a new detective in town.

Using techniques like ‘the stare’ and ‘the waiting game’, will Keon’s approach prove a match for that of the legendary Belgian sleuth?

Tune in to find out on Monday 20 May.

AI in the news

Economics columnist Soumaya Keynes ponders whether AI is going to make a big difference or a small one. Essentially, will it turn out to be “the avocado slicer of food prep, or the microwave?”

She cites various reports predicting AI could lead to anything from a 0.1% rise in productivity to 1.5% over a decade. A DECADE! And one report by business analysts McKinsey suggesting 8% of work hours could be automated by 2030.

Is that all? Imagine the percentage of work hours that would have been saved by innovations like the wheel, hand axes or making fire. If AI can only manage 8% then what’s the point?

Wheels: better than AI
